Drain Cleaning in Palo Alto, CA: One Slow Drain or the Whole House Backing Up?
A kitchen sink that backs up every few weeks, a shower that drains slower each month, or water rising in a tub when the washing machine empties. Each of those points somewhere different in the drain system, and clearing the right part is what keeps it from coming back.

One slow drain, or every drain in the house?
This one question separates a quick fixture clearing from a main line job, and you can usually answer it yourself in a minute. Run water in a few places and watch what happens elsewhere.
| What you see | Where the clog usually is | What it usually needs |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub slow, everything else fine | That fixture's trap or branch | A fixture clearing |
| Several fixtures in one bathroom slow | The branch line serving that room | A branch clearing from an access point |
| Tub or shower gurgles when the toilet flushes | Further down the main drain | A main branch clearing and a camera |
| Water rising in the lowest drain in the house | The main line or the sewer lateral | Main line work, see the sewer page |
If the lowest drain in the house is filling with dirty water, stop using water everywhere. That is a main line or lateral blockage, and the sewer line repair page explains what happens next.

Call (833) 840-2034Clearing kitchen, bathroom and laundry clogs
Kitchen sinks clog for a predictable reason. Grease goes down warm and liquid, cools in the line, and catches everything that follows it.
- Kitchen sinks clog with grease, starch and coffee grounds a short way past the trap. A cable clears the blockage; it does not remove the grease coating the pipe wall.
- Bathroom sinks and showers clog with hair and soap residue, usually close to the fixture. These are the quickest to clear.
- Laundry standpipes overflow when lint builds up in the line, often showing up as water on the floor behind the machine.
- Toilets have their own page. A clogged toilet stays with toilet repair so the two do not get mixed up.
Mechanical clearing with a drain cable is the standard first step. Where a line clears and then clogs again within weeks, the pipe wall itself is coated, and professional hydro jetting is the job that actually removes that buildup.

Why cleanout access changes the price
The two biggest factors in what a drain clearing costs are where the clog is and how easily the line can be reached. A secondary sink cleared through its own trap is a short job. A main branch with no accessible cleanout means pulling a toilet or working through the roof vent.
In Palo Alto the standard sewer cleanout location is in the planting strip near the street, and the city's Rule and Regulation 23 requires property owners to keep those boxes visible and reachable. Over the years many end up under lawn, mulch or pavers.
- Look for a small round or square box lid in the planting strip in front of the house.
- Check along the side of the house for a capped pipe stub a few inches above the ground.
- If you find neither, mention it on the call, because it affects both the method and the range we quote.
What a camera inspection tells you that a cable cannot
A drain cable tells you a blockage has been pushed through. It does not tell you why it formed. A camera run after clearing shows the inside of the pipe, and that is what decides whether you need anything more.
- Grease coating the wall, which points to jetting rather than repeat clearing.
- Roots entering at a joint, which tends to come back until the joint is repaired or lined.
- A belly, a dip where water and waste sit, which no amount of clearing will fix.
- Cracked or separated sections, common in older cast iron and clay lines.
In older Palo Alto houses, original cast iron drain lines are common for the era, and they roughen inside with age. A camera is the honest way to tell whether yours is still serviceable before anyone recommends replacing it.

Call (833) 840-2034Patio drains, area drains and French drains after the first rains
Palo Alto's dry summers mean outdoor drains can sit unused for months, then fail on the first heavy rain of the season. Leaves, soil and roots settle into area drains, patio drains and French drains over the summer.
We clear existing outdoor drain lines and camera them where they have stopped carrying water. If a section has collapsed or filled with soil, it usually needs that section replaced, and you will get a range for that before anything is dug.
Keep outdoor drains separate in your mind from the sewer. Rainwater should never be routed into your sewer lateral, and a downspout or area drain tied into it is something worth fixing.
Restaurant and commercial kitchen grease drains
Food businesses in Palo Alto are required under Palo Alto Municipal Code Chapter 16 to install, maintain and properly use grease control devices. When those are not serviced, grease reaches the building drain and the lateral, and the backups tend to happen during service.
The city's sewer rule also allows it to recover cleaning costs and damages from a customer whose grease or debris is traced to a problem in the system. Regular drain cleaning on a commercial kitchen line costs a great deal less than that.
Keeping a cleared drain clear
Once a line is clear, a few habits do more than any product. None of these involve pouring chemicals into the drain, which can damage older pipe and make the plumber's job harder if the clog comes back.
- Wipe pans and plates into the trash before washing, rather than rinsing grease down the sink.
- Use a hair catcher in showers and tubs and empty it regularly.
- Run plenty of hot water after using a garbage disposal, and keep fibrous scraps out of it.
- If one line keeps needing attention, book a camera run rather than another clearing.
Drain cleaning questions
How much does drain cleaning cost in Palo Alto?
A mechanical clearing with a drain cable typically falls somewhere around $175 to $450, depending on how easily the line can be reached and whether the clog is in a secondary sink line or the main branch. You get a written range before the work starts.
Does drain cleaning need a plumber with a California license?
Clearing a drain does not usually involve a permit. Anything that goes beyond clearing, such as repairing or replacing a section of the sewer lateral, has to meet Palo Alto's utility standards and pass a city inspection, and should be done by a contractor holding a California C-36 plumbing license.
Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging every few weeks?
Usually because the clearing punched a hole through the grease without removing the coating on the pipe wall, so the next clog forms on the same coating. A camera run will confirm it, and hydro jetting is what actually cleans the wall.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?
We advise against them. They rarely clear a real blockage, they can damage older pipe and fittings, and they leave a caustic liquid sitting in the line for whoever has to clear it afterwards. A cup plunger or a call is the better option.
How often should drains be cleaned?
Most homes do not need routine drain cleaning at all. A general guide some plumbers use is every 18 to 24 months for a home with a history of clogs, and more often for lines with known roots or heavy kitchen grease. A camera run is the better guide than a calendar.
